Zeppole, an Italian Dessert in Time for Easter at Lorenz Foods

We did find a way to power through January and February, with the healthy eating, the New Year’s resolutions and of course the credit card bills.  Congratulations to all and let’s breathe in the fresh air of March.  With Easter approaching, many people will have family dinners to plan and attend.  Why not treat your hosts or guests to a delicious Italian delicacy, Zeppole!

WHAT ARE ZEPPOLE?

A zeppole is an Italian pastry consisting of a deep fried dough ball typically 4” in diameter. Usually topped with powdered sugar, and may be filled with custard cream or whipped cream. With some imagination and creativity adding fruit like strawberries, blueberries or bananas can add more colour, flavour and vitamins.

ORIGIN

The word “Zeppole” itself is of ancient origin.  Used in Sicily, it is thought to have come from the Arabic word “Zalabiyha” which means soft doughy.  Zeppole are typical of Italian cuisine especially that of Rome and Naples.  Zeppole are traditionally consumed during the Festa di San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph Day) celebrated every March 19th.  They are sold throughout bakeries, supermarkets, and streets and could be presented as gifts when visiting family and friends.  These Zeppole have become people’s top choice when selecting desserts for Easter celebration!
